Cleaning Up Paint on Artificial Grass

This article was written by Artificial Turf Supply Commercial and Residential Division.

It’s probably something that everyone has done before: perhaps you are painting the outside of your house or garage or maybe painting interior fixtures outdoors. You get a little sloppy and accidentally spill some paint on your lawn. If it’s a natural grass lawn, this isn’t a huge concern as it will eventually grow out and you can cut it. But what happens if you spill paint on artificial turf?

You could try to paint over the spill with green paint. However, it’s unlikely that you’ll get a shade of green that is an exact match for your synthetic turf. This means that you’ll likely wind up with a patch of your lawn that looks slightly different than the rest.

But this doesn’t mean that your lawn is ruined. How you treat your paint stain will partially depend on the type of paint that you used. Paints can be either latex-based or oil-based. Oil-based paint stains are more difficult to treat on synthetic lawns. If you have an oil-based paint spill, you may need to use a heavy-duty carpet cleaner or a chemical specially designed for cleaning artificial grass.

It’s easier to clean a latex-based paint stain. The first thing you’ll want to do is pick the right time clean up the stain. Your first instinct might be to grab towels and start wiping down the spill right away. This isn’t the right approach. You want to blot at the spill inside of scrubbing it so you don’t spread it or rub it deeper into the turf. Wait until the paint is dry before attempting to fully remove the spill.

Your first step should be to use a paint scraper, which can be purchased at any home improvement store. Carefully run the scraper between the paint and the blades of artificial grass. The paint may come right off when you do this but be careful if it is stuck. Applying too much pressure can cause the blades of artificial turf to break from the lawn.

If the paint scraper doesn’t work, your next step should be to get hot water mixed with mild dish soap. Make sure the water isn’t boiling, as you don’t want to melt the turf. Scrub the paint off using the soapy water and a sponge with a textured back. If this doesn’t work you can use paint removers but make sure you use natural oil paint removers instead of ones made from potentially harsh chemicals.
